The Kilt Check

The kilt check.
We all know what it is.

Macho posturing aside, how do you really feel about it?

Sure, everyone likes to be re-assured that they are still attractive.
But, can we not achieve this, with a nice smile accompanied by a "you look very nice" comment?
Or do we actually need more, in the form of a reach into our nether regions?

How does being kilt checked affect others in our lives?
Do we consider our significant others' reaction?
For example, how would we feel if they were groped?
Is our need for validation justifiable, or selfish?

In order to get HONEST answers, I suggest that you need not elaborate, in reply; merely select you poll choice.

Base your vote upon this hypothetical scenario:
You did nothing to entice nor solicit the kilt check. You were minding your own business, and it happened.

Kilts make me so happy. Every night i go to sleep giggling now that kilts have entered my life. They really are quite cheerful, aren't they?
I'm doing a little speech on kilts and I was curious where you all came from. Also, are the styles of pleats especially significant? And lastly, as one would assume any kilt outsider would ask, are the majority of you in favor of not wearing anything under your kilts? It seems such a rude thing to ask, so I won't ask you to expand further upon that than a simple yay or nay. Also, if you have any links that would be enormously helpful. Thanks!

Sporran #11 - Commission, Skunk: Wip

Hi All,
A fellow kiltie and I have been busy little bees.
Whilst I've been making #5 Hunting Sporrans (pictured at the bottom) for the last few months, ShaunMaxwell and I have been collaborating on a design together.

It started many months ago with talk of a full mask skunk. Later, to both his and my dismay, we discovered that our respective wives HATE them. This talk eventually evolved into design plans which I'm proud to now reveal to all.

The cantle is hammered leather (the one pictured is only a trial to test for size with all the stitching, tooling, etc in place. A few small changes and better fit and finish well accompany the final version) which will be braided along the top edges. It will be a functioning 'purse' mouth. Each 'plate' of the cantle is formed from two 10oz veg tanned sides which will sandwich the fur and the leather (for the back side).

The body is skunk in a very rich black. The stripe has very good definition. The interior is a very nice 4oz dark red suede, which can be seen behind everything. This serves a dual purpose. It reinforces the back of the fur (which can be a touch delicate) and also give a bit of visual interest when the sporran is opened.

It will have a gusset to aid storage.

The braiding for the center closure and side ties is a four-strand square sennit. I like this braid particularly as the skin side of the leather always faces outward, giving a nice finished appearance. Please note that the sample is actually blue, I was just demoing it for the commissioner and had a scrap of blue around to use

The top-knot that the center braid wraps around is a manrope knot. This is a very solid knot with HEAPS of history and a very nice finished look, almost herringbone. It is cut of 2oz veg tan dyed black to match the cantle. Again, please note that the sample is an undyed trial.

The design IS finished, final details squared away. Templates are cut and materials sourced. From this point onward, I intend to fully document the build-out.

As always, constructive comments and critique are welcome and invited.

A pic of one of the #5 hunting sporrans, inspired by HRH Prince Charles, Duke of Rothsay.

Interesting Scottish Places

Quote

Smack bang in the centre of Scotland is a Munro that dominates both the landscape and the imaginings of numerous scientists, walkers and searchers after the supernatural.

Ten miles north of Aberfeldy in Perthshire, Schiehallion, from the Gaelic Sidh Chailleann – “Fairy Hill of the Caledonians” – is an isolated glacial monument described in 1901 by the Rev Hugh MacMillan as “a great icy tool … it is a residual, adamantine knob of pure quartz.”

This “icy tool” was, in 1774, the site of one of the most exciting scientific experiments of the 18th century. It was here that Dr Nevil Maskelyne, the Astronomer Royal, conducted research which resulted in an accurate measurement of the density of the earth. Maskelyne was helped in this ground-breaking work by the mathematician Charles Hutton, who, in an aside to the important work of “weighing the world” also came up with the notion of contour lines.

Yet however interesting Schiehallion is, or was, to the world of science, it is with regard to darker matters that it is still discussed. The mountain was long been regarded as a sacred and mythical place where fairies roamed, with tales of long underground caves taking the unsuspecting to the underworld.

The Rev Robert MacDonald published his Statistical Account for Scotland in 1845. In it he wrote of a “remarkable cave … called Tom-a-mhorair [which is believed to be] full of chambers or separate apartments, and that, as soon as a person advances a few yards, he comes to a door, which, the moment he enters, closes, as it opened, of its own accord, and prevents his returning.”

This mysterious cave was also deemed worthy of note by Malcolm Ferguson, who, writing in 1891, describes a “long series of mysterious caves, extending from one side of the mountain to the other.”

According to tradition this cave was the haunt of Sidhs and fairies, which mankind entered at its peril. It is perhaps here that the “Cailleach Bheur” goes to rest – if rest she ever does. This terrifying blue-faced hag, the representation of winter, is reborn each Halloween, to smite the land with all kinds of terrible weather.

Other traditions hold that the magic caves are peopled by a powerful supernatural race. These “offspring of the Gods” enjoy extraordinary powers such as the ability to levitate and make themselves invisible (yes, OK, so some of this research came from David Icke’s website and this article was nearly left incomplete, so sidetracked was I by pictures of a reptile emerging from beneath Hilary Clinton’s face, and snakes appearing in Elizabethan portraits, and … that’s probably enough for now.)

More extensive is the body of writing which investigates whether Mount Schiehallion is a lost mystical Biblical mountain. Isaiah, 14:13, is to blame for this particular obsession, including as it does the passage: “You said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; above the stars of God I will set my throne on high; I will sit on the mount of assembly in the far reaches of the north.”

According to Barry Dunford, in ancient times there were a trio of mystical mountains, including Mount Sinai, Mount Moriah and Mount Heredom – whose location remains a mystery. Heredom (“Mount of God”) can’t be found on any map, but is, according to Dunford “60 miles from Edinburgh” – ie Schiehallion, the “mount of assembly” mentioned in Isaiah. His book becomes slightly confusing unless you’re very versed in Freemasonry and can follow the Masonic allusions to Heredom. I sadly can’t – and struggle even to paraphrase, but, erm, he says there’s lots of evidence.

Excitingly for those still suffering from the withdrawal of all the splendid Templar, Rosslyn, Holy-Grail-Da-Vinci-Code stuff, there is apparently a possibility that Heredom could be Solomon’s Temple and therefore very probably the bolt-hole sought by fleeing Templars when they escaped France with all their fabulous treasure. Oh, yes.

Still, you don’t need to be a supernatural buff to love this mountain. It’s hugely popular with walkers. The east side was acquired by the John Muir Trust in 1999, who have worked to improve the path that leads to the summit.

It’s a good walk, with spectacular views, and, who knows, the possibility of meeting up with some extra-terrestrials when you stop for a breather.

Bears, Wolves & Lynx To Be Reintroduced To Scotland?

Under a cold, damp grey sky the muffled roar of water cascading down treeless hillsides, hewing its way through the granite bedrock, provides almost the only sound amid a glen of tranquillity.

Alladale Estate lies less than 25 miles and world away from the modern bustling city centre of Inverness, yet it is at the forefront of conservation and eco-tourism in Britain.

Alladale is a working 23,000 acre Highland estate providing luxury accommodation, deer stalking and fishing for a few hundred visitors a year, but owner and millionaire philanthropist Paul Lister has bigger plans. He aims to create Britain’s first ecological game reserve by turning the clock back more than 2,000 years.

Last week the Highland Council granted the estate a dangerous wild animal licence, meaning wild boar, elk, wolves, lynx and bears could soon be reintroduced.

Lister, the son of Noel Lister – the co-founder of the MFI furniture empire – has spent the last 20 years of his life dreaming of recreating Scotland’s remote wilderness from a time long before humans began altering nature for their own ends.

As the owner of Alladale he wants to transform his 23,000 acres, along with almost as much again from neighbouring landowners, into a reserve for indigenous flora, fauna and animals.

The new game reserve will be home to Caledonian pine, juniper, hazel and round birch along with the reintroduction of lichen and grasses.

Experts believe that if anybody can accomplish the reintroduction of the European grey wolf, which was hunted to extinction in Scotland in 1743, and the bear, which was driven out 900 years ago, it is Lister.

‘We received our dangerous animals licence last week and as soon as the foot and mouth regulations die down we’ll be bringing in two young elk from Sweden as part of the first step,’ said Hugh Fullerton Smith, a New Zealand-born wildlife expert and general manager of Alladale who was brought in to help set up the game reserve.

At all stages of me crafting a sgian, I try to keep the client informed of what's happening. I supply regular updates, & if I have too many holdups (like life getting in the way, for example) I make it up to the client with a price reduction, free shipping, or similar goodwill gesture.
Sadly, not all vendors give a stuff about their customers. It doesn't take a hell of a lot of effort to keep a client in the loop. To answer PMs or just be straight out honest. I'm not unreasonable or hard to get along with. BUT... DONT make the mistake of thinking if you dodge me for long enough I'll forget about it. DONT think because I'm on the other side of the world I'll just put up with it when you bend me over & rape me. Fair warning... my patience has expired. I'm sick of the RARE excuses, and ongoing silence If I dont see what I payed for in the next 4 weeks. I'll be talking to my bank about credit card fraud. And every forum I can find will hear about it, even if I have to join them just to bag the particular merchant out. I am f@#$ing unhappy.
I bought the whole 8 yard bolt because I didn't want to deal with extra seams. According to the label on the bolt, it's a black and red Stewart in a cotton/polyester blend. The weight and texture feels about the same as my Sportkilt, so I think it should work out OK. Right now I have it stretched out on the sofa with sections temporarily pleated in both styles trying to decide which I like better. Unfortunately the material is only 43 1/2" wide so I can't get enough to do both!! I'm partial to black in my everyday wear, so I kind of like the sett; but the stripe would be more slimming for my butt (and there's still a lot of black that shows). I know ultimately the decision is mine; but I'm just tossing this out for opinions. While it's stretched out on the sofa, I am also trying to decide if I'm going to do a RevK or just a straight knife pleat.

P.S. I know it's not D-I-Y; but my future son-in-law's kilt (with accessories) arrived from Scotland today for the wedding.

I have all ready agreed to wear a kilt to the wedding. My daughter and s-i-l are using that to get his father to agree as well. He's being a little reticent.

What Makes A Kilt A Kilt? And Not A Skirt?

I'm not trying to be insulting with the question. Ever since I came across NeedlePimp's Apoco-Kilt I've re-kindled my interest in owning a kilt and actually wearing it in public. I've talked about this at work with some of my buddies and most are receptive to the idea, even though they probably wouldn't do it. But, there's one guy that keeps on in a friendly teasing manner about how a kilt is just a skirt for men and that the only difference is the equipment underneath. My problem is I don't a good retort to shut him up and actually make him think. I've tried explaining how in actuality that it makes more sense for a woman to wear p@nt$ as opposed to a man due to the equipment, but he keeps insisting it's a skirt. Well, his insistence on calling it a skirt has got me to thinking about my ignorance on the subject, so I'm asking you guys. What makes a kilt a kilt and not a skirt? I honestly don't know and haven't been able to find anything in my searching that will answer the question.

Another Greeting From Oklahoma

Hi everybody. I'm from Tulsa and have not yet gotten a kilt, but I am very interested in having one or a dozen. I'm a Henderson on my paternal side and a Stephenson on my maternal side, so there's 2 tartans already. I'm also a Soldier, so that makes 3. Anyway, I found this site when I came across NeedlePimp's Apoco-Kilt and it looked like it was a good place for information without snobbiness. So, Hello everybody and see you around.

New To Kilting

Hello to all. I just got my first kilt, and must say I haven't been this excited in years. It's been on the wish list for a long time, and I suffered from the misperception that they were prohibitively expensive. It's a traditional style, but because of the fabric, I would say it's more of a casual kilt. Which suits me, because that's mainly how I intend to wear it.

I was happy to find this forum, it will be nice to talk to other kilters. I am the only one I have seen in my town here in Michigan to wear one outside of special occasions.

I am of Scottish descent, if it matters at all. The tartan I got on this one is not one of my clan tartans, though. It's a Black Watch. Looks great, did I happen to mention I am geeked about it? (lol) When I get some, I'll post pics. For now, I'm just glad to be kilted and find like minded folks.

Thanks, I look forward to getting to know you all.

Hello

I probably am the only latina who ever has glanced upon this forum. But i don't know. Anyway, I'm doing a speech for school and the topic I chose was the kilt. There is, as i feared, FAR more to it than I ever could have envisaged. So that's why I'm here, to ask you kilt experts a few questions, if you would be so kind to answer them, perhaps. Thanks.
first of all, what exactly is tartan? And what is it's purpose? Is it some sort of fabric coat of arms?

likely there will be more questions to follow, for whatever research can't answer. Thanks again!

New And From Nc

Hey Guys. I found your site a few weeks ago think I have read every post. I am looking at buying a kilt, or cilt since my surname is Welch, but since I have recently had RNY sergury I will wait awhile untill my weight settles down. My wife seems to be supportive and as far as anyone else is concerned, well we all know what they can do. I would really like to hear from other Kilt wearers in NC. Also does anyone know if there will be a vendor at the ren fair at Concord? As always thanks for the past and future information.
