  1. Irish Kilter

    Hello All!

Hello there! I have been wearing kilts off and on for about a year now and am going to be competing in a local and possibly a semi-local highland games event coming this September. I'm speaking of Kilt Fest in Mercer County NJ and the Ligonier Highland Games near Pittsburgh PA. I haven't sent my application into the one in PA yet but I am off that weekend so I really want to go. I have been looking for some cheaper equipment but that isn't going well so I am using rocks and a 47lb tire haha.
  2. Hello everyone, I'm new here, even new to kilting (if that is a term!). Today I received delivery of my first kilt! Okay, okay it's a utility kilt, maybe not viewed as a 'real' kilt here, but a kilt nonetheless. As an Englishman, I don't feel right donning tartan, but that might change once I get comfortable with this. As I opened the package, It was rather skirtlike than I expected (silly me), but once I felt the material and put it on I was smitten. They are beautiful. Aren't they? I feel real excited to enter a new phase in my life..a new kilted me. Brian
  3. Comrades, I purchased a Royal Regiment of Scotland kilt and it arrived from Co. Antrim (NI) just a few months ago. It is the kilt currently in use and is MoD issue. It's gorgeous and very sturdy but, sadly, doesn't fit me. I wish it did! It has roll-pleats (which are still sown down), stury black buckles, nice leather straps. I paid $300 for the kilt and international shipping so I'm asking for a "best offer" and I'll ship anywhere in the USA at no cost to you. I have worn it once as an trial around the house and had people offer their opinions. The one that mattered the most comes from a well-known kiltmaker who said that it was absolutely gorgeous but simply a bit too big for me. I'm 5 ft 8 in tall and I think this kilt would be best on a person who is an inch to three inches taller than I am. The basting stitches were still on the kilt until the above-mentioned trial which stemmed from my lovely wife removing the stitches when I was at work so she could see me with the kilt on. https://www.flickr.com/photos/36969218@N02/24563062360/in/album-72157664221611621/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/36969218@N02/24832283786/in/album-72157664221611621/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/36969218@N02/24858535525/in/album-72157664221611621 Measurements: Height = 176 cm Waist = 88 cm Breech = 104 cm Regards, Jonathan
  4. Hey, everyone. I spend my most of my time in and around the big North Texas metropolis region. I'be been occasionally kilted for about one and a half years, and I currently own 5 kilts. I play the bass, ride a Harley and I've spent some time on one of the other kilt-related internet forums. Haven't browsed here too much, but that's all about to change. I'm looking forward to increasing my knowledge and enjoying the virtual company of fellow kilters. - Minus
  5. I found you "family" the other day and have been trolling for about two days. I can see that you guys are a family and I think it's cool! I decided to just be a forum user for now but will become a member in the near future. About me: I currently live in S. Texas or occupied Mexico however you want to look at it (this is a joke and as you get to know me you will understand). I am originaly from Chattanooga, Tn. I have a cousin that got into geneology and verified what I always felt to be true. Our family comes from Dumfrieshire Scotland and would have been part of the Johnstone Clan. As of yet I do not own a kilt. Plans are being made as I type this to rectify that situation. However, this brings me to my questions; I have two sons that want to experience their heritage as much as I do. However, one of my sons does not want us to be "matching" as we wear our kilts. I have found the three family tartans of the Johnstone clan but, being as I am buying 3 kilts at one time, I need an affordalbe way to do so. Let me explain: I understand the difference between the Moderen, Ancient and Weathered tartans. I have found both the Moderen and Ancient at resonable prices but have not been able to locate the Weathered at a resonable price. (Not saying that the asking prices I have found it at are high, I'm sure it would be worth the cost.) So, knowing that there may be other Tartans that I have not uncovered that are linked into the Johnstone Clan, could someone please point me in the right direction? Oh, and "Howdy" ScottJ
  6. I am looking for that first kilt and I have some questions and needing some advice. My situation is this, our finances are limited at present, and I have the option of buying an economy kilt or saving for a higher end one. If I go ahead and purchase an economy kilt, I can hopefully enjoy the freedom that a kilt offers now. But are economy kilts worth the money spent? I want to eventually have several kilts, including casual utility kilts and some dressier ones made with my clan tartans. I suspect that the clan tartans, Hay and Wilson, would have to be special orders and pricy. Any thoughts, suggestions, or considerations would be greatly appreciated!
