Has anybody tried making a rob roy style jacket? or know where you can get one? That would be something i would love to have for ren fairs, or wearing on a cool day with my kilts.

Take a look at:
http://www.potomacle...m/PL_Robroy.htm
I've seen their goods, at local faires - very nice quality.

Never seen their merchandise, in person, but had this in my bookmarks:

Also, as an alternative, have you considered a "swordman's vest"?

I have one of their leather swordsman's vest - It's passably decent in looks, and inexpensive.

Of course, there's always good ol' eBay....

I've looked at those, the $800 is out of question, the 300 is more likely, I have considered the swordsmen vest, btt my torso doesn't really get cold, i would really like something with sleeves.

Might want to check with Donnie - Wyvern leather Works.
He does some great things with leather, and I seem to recall a pix or two of him, in some leather vests or jackets he created.

Ravenswood Leather makes some doublets at around the 2-300 price range. I had bought one of their pouches. Aside from the clasp loosening up a bit (and its a clasp alot of ren merchants currently use) it was good quality. So good apparently, that one of my kids friends decided to steal it. One of these days I intead to order another one.

Hi KiltedTexan,
I do have a picture of me in a leather vest I made. I have never learned how to do lining in them, and the leather tends to bleed color on my shirts when I sweat. Never tried sleeves either. Sorry. Something of that nature takes a lot of expertise, and is probably worth what you pay for it. be careful with inexpensive stuff!

As a novice leather worker this definately has my curosity up. one thing to remember when you are looking at prices KiltedTexan is the base price of hides these days and that jacket looks like it will take alot of leather to make.

Sorry, been really busy with sporrans. Haven't gotten to play with it yet. Det Morson is right, it is going to take quite a bit of leather to do this. and at somewhere between $5.00 to $7.00 a square foot, counting waste, then add in a liner and labor, it is going to be expensive I'm afraid.
