There is not a perfectly solid definition of "kilt" that is accepted universally, yet a standard had to be set so that this list could be made. This standard is not intended to act as an authority over what is or is not a kilt. For this list, a "kilt" is an unbifurcated garment intended for the masculine gender; it is a wrap that covers the body from the waist to the knees on all sides, and has a vertical pleated structure in the back and is flat in the front.
No assumptions should be made about the geographic location. It may or may not represent the site's business location; it may or may not represent the place your item is made or shipped from; it may or may not represent the location where your money will go; it may or may not represent a location for a brick'n'mortar store. The data gathered for that field was mostly found on the vendor's website, or when needed was found by sleuthing with Google and Yellow Book.
NM = Neo-Modern / Post-Modern
- not built to work with tartan patterns
- rarely if at all made of wool
- typically designed to be worn and cared for like normal pants/jeans
- patterns: camo, solids, tie-dye, etc.
- materials: nearly anything. leather, cotton, canvas, cotton-poly, etc.
WA = Wool Alternatives
- made to resemble the Traditional Modern kilt
- usually these kilts are an affordable alternative to the Traditional Modern
- these kilts are good for those allergic to wool
- usually lighter weight than Traditional Modern kilts
- patterns: solids, tartans
- materials: Poly-Viscose, Polyester-Rayon, Acrylic, Cotton, Cotton-Poly, Saxony Wool
TM = Traditional Modern (Victorian era and newer)
- this is the standard, the "real" thing, this is what your pants fear
- these are the kilts seen in parades and formal military functions
- these are comparatively expensive and usually heavy
- these kilts have not changed in design over 200 years
- patterns: solids, tartans
- materials: always made with 100% new sheep's wool
There is not a category for historical reproductions which have become more popular of late, probably thanks to fine films like Rob Roy and Braveheart. Few vendors offer these, but if they advertise it, a note will be placed in the last field. Many find these kilts very easy to construct with some configurations requiring few sartorial skills if any.
